Requirements and Assessment

1.  Attendance and Participation (10%)

Students are expected to show up for synchronistic classes (either in-person or over Zoom) and actively participate in class discussions.

2. Assignments (90%)

(1) Weekly reading responses (10%):

Please e-mail your response to your instructor by 10 p.m. the day before class. Your responses (1-2 detailed paragraphs) should comment on one or two specific detail from the class materials. Within those parameters, you can write about anything you would like.

For some class sessions, the instructor will ask you to respond to particular prompts or exercises; for others, you can respond to any aspect of the materials that you find interesting.

(2) Mid-term assignment (30%): due on Week 9

Each group of students presents (for 15min) an Asian intercultural theatre work/troupe with a focus on the analysis of the intercultural elements: what strategy are they using to present/represent Asian identity on the global stage? Do they correspond with any models we covered in our class so far? Are they problematic – if so, in what way?

You are encouraged to use diversified forms of presentation (visual and audio aids, slides, etc.) to engage your classmates instead of reading from a script. For any visual or audio materials you’d like to use, please limit the length to 2 minutes. You are welcome to send the materials before class to your classmates.

(3) Final assignment (50%): due on Week 15

Each student will create a short performance that engages with the theme of their own or others’ ethnic/cultural identity and perform for their classmates on a voluntary basis in Week 15. For those who prefer not to perform, you can record your performance in private and send the recording to your instructor.

The performance can draw on, comment on, or subvert any models of Asian theatre and performance that we covered in this class, including but not limited to: theatre Orientalism, intercultural theatre, diaspora theatre and performance, theatre translation, etc.. It can also draw on the form of BIOBOXES demonstrated in Theatre Replacement’s production.

Every student will write a short reflection paper (3 pages) to explain the artistic choices they make in the performance piece. The assessment of this assignment will be based on both your creative effort and the quality of your reflection paper.
